Discover the active summit craters of Mount Etna with us and experience a trekking adventure across unique lava deserts, moon-like landscapes and over the edges of the active craters.
This tour starts at the meeting point in Giarre and on the way to Piano Provenzana your guide will tell you everything you need to know about the Etna villages and answer all your questions. We will move from the typical Mediterranean vegetation to a complete change to mountain vegetation. In Piano Provenzana, located at an altitude of 1800 metres on the northern slope of Mount Etna, where all paved roads end, we will meet the volcanological guide who will give us the necessary equipment for the tour.
From here, we will take off-road vehicles from 1800 metres to 2850 metres – where “Pizzi Deneri”, the volcanological observatory, is located. We begin our trek, accompanied by the volcanological guide and equipped with helmets, we hike towards the summit crater, past impressive dark lava flows from the past. Passing the north-east crater, we reach our destination – the central crater Voragine and Bocca Nuova.
We walk on the rim of the crater and can observe how the ground changes, sometimes it is black, sometimes it changes to a yellow colour, caused by the sulphur vapours.
On this tour, the volcanological guide will decide how close we can get to the smoking chimneys of the crater, but one thing is certain – we will have a fantastic view, not only of a unique natural spectacle, but also of the rest of Sicily and sometimes even as far as the Aeolian Islands.
The hike takes about 5 hours in total and has a difference in altitude of about 500 metres, the length is about 6 kilometres. The trek ends again at “Pizzi Deneri”, from where we are driven back to 1800 metres by off-road vehicle.
Once we are back in Piano Provenzana, you will have the opportunity to taste typical products such as honey, liqueurs and pesti before returning to the meeting point or accommodation.
