This tour starts at the meeting point in Giarre and on the way to Piano Provenzana your guide will tell you everything you need to know about the Etna villages and answer all your questions. We will move from the typical Mediterranean vegetation to a complete change to mountain vegetation. In Piano Provenzana, situated at an altitude of 1800 metres on the northern slope of Mount Etna, where all the tarmac roads end, you will have time to enjoy a coffee and to use the restroom.
From here, we will take off-road vehicles from 1800 metres to 2850 metres, where the volcanological observatory “Pizzi Deneri” is located. We take an easy hike of around one hour in total, during which we can marvel at the huge “Valle del Bove” valley in front of us. Accompanied by your guide, he will explain everything about the volcano and the importance of this valley.
However, you will not only see the valley, but also the imposing main craters from a close but safe distance and will get an impression of the unimaginable dimensions and vastness of this natural spectacle that still characterises the east coast of Sicily today.
After this hike, you will return to “Pizzi Deneri” at 2850 metres to descend by off-road vehicle to about 2100 metres, where you will do a second easy hike of about 1 hour on the craters of 2002. This tour is the perfect opportunity to not only understand the difference between the active summit craters and the numerous side craters, but to see them live in front of you.
Afterwards, the off-road vehicle will take you back to Piano Provenzana at 1800 metres, where you will have the opportunity to taste typical products such as honey, liqueurs and pesti and have a small snack if you wish.
At the end of the tour, your guide will take you to a lava cave, which you will explore equipped with helmets and torches and learn a lot about the Sicilian myths and customs of this place.
The guide will then take you back to the meeting point or your accommodation.
