Etna, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2013, is certainly one of the most famous and most visited volcanoes in the world and, at 3,357 metres above sea level, also the largest active volcano in Europe. The huge area is unique because endemic plant species such as the broom or the Etnensis birch can be found here. The landscape is often described as almost „moonlike“ because of the numerous lava flows. These flows have occurred over time and have completely changed the surrounding landscape, sometimes even threatening some of the villages on the slopes.
Nevertheless, the locals have learned to live in symbiosis with the concentrated power of this majestic giant. Today, IDDA („she“ in the Sicilian dialect) is compared to a woman, or more precisely a mother, who has always watched over and safeguarded the Catanians‘ water and food resources. Contray to what people might think, the area of Etna is rich of minerals and ideal for the development of agriculture and the production of excellent wines from endemic grapes that are characteristic only of this specific area with its volcanic soil.
Around Etna, not only can you enjoy the natural landscape, explore the hiking trails or taste the typical products, but every corner is a place rich in history, customs and legends, such as the legend of the battle between the giant Typhoeus and Zeus, the father of the gods. Thanks to the intervention of the nymph Etna in favour of Zeus, he managed to trap Typhoeus in the bowels of the earth. This is just one of the many explanations that Sicilians have had for Etna‘s eruptions for thousands of years, a sign that the trapped monster is not giving up and is still trying to escape.
